Which exam do I need?

In Switzerland, there are various recognized German exams. The choice depends on your goal:

  • fide test: Official language proof for residence permit and naturalization in Switzerland. Recognized by migration authorities.
  • telc German (A1-B2): Internationally recognized certificate. Very common in Switzerland and Europe.
  • Goethe certificate (A1-C2): German certificate recognized worldwide. Especially for academic purposes and international recognition.

Exam for residence and naturalization

For residence permit (settlement permit C) and naturalization, language requirements apply in Switzerland:

  • Settlement permit C: At least A2 written and B1 spoken
  • Naturalization: Nationwide, minimum requirements apply (B1 spoken / A2 written). Canton and municipality can set higher requirements. In canton Thurgau: B2 spoken, B1 written.

The fide test is the fastest path to recognized proof. Alternatively, telc and Goethe certificates are also accepted.

If you want, we can tell you in a consultation which requirements are typically requested in your case (place of residence/municipality).
