German Courses A1 in Kreuzlingen (A1.1 & A1.2)

Are you starting from zero or do you already have first basic knowledge? The A1 courses (A1.1 and A1.2) are your entry into the German language – step by step, with lots of practice and in a friendly atmosphere.

Language level A1 consists of two consecutive courses: A1.1 and A1.2. After a free placement check, you join the course that fits you directly.

What you can do after level A1

After completing both A1 courses (A1.1 and A1.2), you can communicate in simple everyday situations in Switzerland:

  • Introduce yourself, greet people and say goodbye
  • Shop at the supermarket and understand prices
  • Ask and answer simple questions
  • Talk about your daily routine and your free time
  • Arrange appointments and fill in forms
  • Find your way in your apartment and neighborhood
  • Find your way at the train station and on public transport
  • Describe simple symptoms at the doctor

Which courses belong to level A1?

Level A1 consists of two sub-courses that build on each other:

  • A1.1 – Entry into the German language (absolute beginners)
  • A1.2 – Becoming confident in everyday Swiss life (with first basic knowledge)

You do not have to start with A1.1: if you already have some German skills, you can join A1.2 directly after a free placement check.

Course A1.1 – Entry into the German language

In course A1.1, you build the foundation for your life and communication in Switzerland. You learn to manage the most important everyday situations.

For example, you learn:

  • How to greet, introduce yourself and ask how someone is in German
  • How to talk about your family and friends
  • How to name and understand food, quantities and prices in German
  • How to describe your apartment and give your address
  • How to understand time and weekdays and talk about your daily routine
  • How to talk about leisure, hobbies and the weather

Grammar & language:

  • How to conjugate verbs (e.g. ich komme, du kommst)
  • Articles (der, die, das) and simple sentence building
  • Numbers from 1 to 100
  • Perfect tense – the first past tense form (e.g. ich habe gelernt, ich bin gegangen)

Course A1.2 – Becoming confident in everyday Swiss life

In course A1.2, you consolidate your basic knowledge and learn to move more confidently in everyday Swiss life – whether in transport, at the doctor or at work.

For example, you learn:

  • How to talk about your profession and work experience
  • How to understand procedures at public offices and fill in forms
  • How to describe pain at the doctor and arrange appointments
  • How to read timetables, buy a ticket at a machine and describe the way
  • How to write and understand invitations and talk about holidays

Grammar & language:

  • New modal verbs: müssen, dürfen, sollen (e.g. Sie müssen einen Antrag ausfüllen)
  • The past forms of «sein» and «haben» (e.g. ich war, ich hatte)
  • Location details and directions (zu, nach, in)
  • How to express polite requests (e.g. Könnten Sie mir das bitte zeigen?)

Prices & group size

Our A1 courses (A1.1 and A1.2) take place in small groups:

  • Maximum 8 participants per group – so you get enough speaking time
  • 20 CHF per lesson (45 min.), 56 lessons per course
  • The course book is included in the course price

Depending on the course format, one sub-course (A1.1 or A1.2) lasts:

  • Intensive course: Mon–Fri, approx. 4–8 weeks
  • Afternoon and evening courses: 2–3× per week, approx. 9–14 weeks
  • Saturday course: 1× per week, approx. 16–21 weeks
